Arnold Zenkert ist am 13.4.2013 verstorben. Wir trauern um einen sehr geschätzten Sonnenuhrfreund, der uns auch persönlich ans Herzen gewachsen ist.
Sein bekanntes Fachbuch “Faszination Sonnenuhr”, sein unermüdliches Engagement in der Lehre und auch seine Artikel in unserem Sonnenuhrblog haben außerordentlich dazu beigetragen, bei vielen Interessierten Begeisterung für das “sonnige” Thema zu wecken.
Noch kurz vor seinem Ableben hat uns Arnold Zenkert den folgenden Beitrag zur Veröffentlichung zugesandt:

mir ist wieder etwas Praktisches für die Sonnenuhrenfreunde (aber nicht für sie) eingefallen. Wie wichtig die Sonne ist, weiß man nach den grauen und sonnenarmen Winter zu schätzen. Da kann auch der Namensträger HELIOS nicht helfen, wenn Herr Putin den Eisschrank nicht endlich zumacht. Freuen wir uns, der Himmelsäquator ist überschritten und es geht aufwärts.

Ein Nachruf auf Arnold Zenkert von Harald Grenzhäuser.
Sonnenuhrkonstrukteur Klaus Heinecke, der uns schon öfter mit durchdachten und sorgfältig gefertigten Instrumenten erfreut hat, stellt uns diesmal seine Entwicklung einer horizontalen Sonnenuhr vor, auf der es eine Menge zu entdecken gibt.
Ausgehend vom Schattenwerfer findet man zunächst die klassische Sonnenuhr mit Anzeige der wahren Ortszeit. Zusätzlich ist auf dem Schattenwerfer ein Lochgnomon montiert, der eine Sonnenuhrskala bedient, die die Ortszeitdifferenz von Friedrichsdorf berücksichtigt, so dass man mit Hilfe der darunter zu findenden Zeitgleichungsskala (neg. Wert) die mitteleuropäische Zeit (MEZ/MESZ) bestimmen kann.
Auch eine Datumsskala mit den Eintrittslinien der Sonne in die Tierkreiszeichen und die Linien des Sommersolstitium und der Äquinoktien durften nicht fehlen. Die Skala für Winter und Herbst wurde aus Platzgründen weggelassen.
Eine interessante und schön gemachte Sonnenuhr, die auch als Lehrmodell für Schulen ideal geeignet wäre.

auf dem Weg – mit kleinem Zubehör und für kleines Geld – der POLARIS ein paar zusätzliche Zeit-Funktionen zu entlocken, bin ich wieder einen Schritt weiter gekommen: Die Bestimmung der Sonnenauf- und Sonnenuntergangszeiten, mithilfe der babylonischen und inversen italienischen Stunden, wie sie von einer Kegelsonnenuhr angezeigt werden. Das Besondere an dieser Variante ist, dass sich der Öffnungswinkel dieses ‘Kegels’ ganz automatisch der Breitengradeinstellung einer POLARIS anpasst, ohne dass sie dazu ‘tiefergelegt’ werden muss, wie bei dem Modell von Herrn Jansen, das er für die mathematische Herleitung gebaut hatte.
Nebenbei ermöglicht die Doppelfunktion der großen Scheibe, dass die bereits vorgestellten Zeitgleichungswalzen für das Sommer- und Winterhalbjahr immer auf der Vorderseite der POLARIS eingesetzt werden können, wo sie, im Gegensatz zur Rückseite, jederzeit problemlos aufgesteckt und wieder abgenommen werden können. Ich habe in dem Beitrag “Zeitgleichungswalzen für die POLARIS Sonnenuhr” einen entsprechenden Nachtrag eingefügt.
Ich hoffe, dass Ihnen und den Lesern diese kleine Anregung gefällt, und - dass sie auch funktioniert …
Als nächstes möchte ich mich dann mit dem zur Kegelsonnenuhr gehörenden Horizontal-Zifferblatt beschäftigen, das immer auf den jeweiligen Breitengrad abgestimmt hergestellt werden muss. – Das soll auch noch etwas flexibler werden ..

Oder gibt es (so wie bei mir) wenigstens die Ideen dazu ? Ich würde mich sehr über Anregungen freuen. Gerne auch zu anderen Sonnenuhrtypen. Wir möchten doch alle nur spielen …
Hallo Herr Heller,
auf der Suche nach Möglichkeiten, meiner POLARIS zusätzliche Zeit-Informationen zu entlocken, die (noch) nicht serienmäßig vorhanden sind, habe ich “nebenbei” eine sehr einfache und schnelle Methode gefunden, Horizontal- und Vertikal-Zifferblätter für beliebige Neigungen und Breitengrade zu zeichnen. Bevor die POLARIS damit auch zur Horizontaluhr wird, kann man sie hervorragend als Hilfsmittel zum Konstruieren dieser Zifferblätter verwenden. Das könnte vielleicht auch für andere POLARIS-Besitzer interessant sein.

Hallo Herr Heller,
heute möchte ich Ihnen gerne eine alternative Zeitablesung für die POLARIS vorstellen.
Wie bei allen scheiben- förmigen Äquatorialsonnen- uhren, die korrekt auf den Breitengrad des Standorts eingestellt sind, kann auch bei der POLARIS im Winter- halbjahr die Uhrzeit nur auf der dem Boden zuge- wandten Südseite der Äquatorscheibe abgelesen werden. Das ist bei einer POLARIS 1000, mit einem Scheibendurchmesser von einem Meter, sicher problemlos möglich, bei einer kleinen 12-cm-Uhr aber nur bedingt, – weil man eben so schlecht drunter kriechen kann …
Nun könnte man die Uhr einfach auf einen Spiegel stellen und den Schatten des Polstabs auf der Süd- seite der Äquatorscheibe im Spiegel betrachten. Aber es geht noch einfacher – und zwar ganz ohne Hilfsmittel. Die glänzende POLARIS hat bereits alles Notwendige ‘an Bord’ …

Und eine alternative Ablesemöglichkeit für die Sommer-Walze, die sich in Verbindung mit einer zusätzlichen 120-mm-Scheibe ergibt. Vorteil: Die ZG-Walzen für das Sommer- und Winterhalbjahr können immer auf der Vorderseite der POLARIS eingesetzt werden, wo sie, im Gegensatz zur Rückseite, jederzeit problemlos aufgesteckt und wieder abgenommen werden können.

La Faula is a winery and Agriturismo in the Friuli Region of North Italy. Some years ago Christine, Carlo and Franca of Helios Sundials stayed at La Faula. They were here on a research trip to the village of Aiello di Friuli which is known locally as the “Village of the Sundials”. Many guests pass through La Faula and many have interesting professions or hobbies. But not many are sun-dial inventors, developers and designers. Not knowing anything about sundials, we were, of course, impressed that someone could have the knowledge and skill to design sundials and have them made but to us sundials were colourful ornaments designed to bring interest to the outside of a house. A piece of metal stuck into a wall at an angle with some nice images around and a half-moon of Roman numerals underneath. It seemed unlikely to us that a sundial could be more than that – after-all the essence of a sundial is just a shadow falling on a light surface!
Christine, Carlo and Franca returned to La Faula more than once. Franca especially had made friends with our dogs, Carlo seemed to enjoy the cooking and, mostly, the weather was nice so it was a good place to pass some days. Luca and I asked ourselves a number of times whether we could imagine having a sundial at La Faula. But we couldn’t. Our house is an old farmhouse and they never had sundials. The old share-croppers told the time by listening to the church bells that toll-out every hour and half hour. The Villas of the Nobles had sundials but, well, we fall on the share-croppers side of the line. Putting a sundial in the garden would almost have seemed to be a pretension. And we want La Faula not to pretend to be something that it wasn’t but to take its real past and use it to flavour the present.
But as time went on our curiosity regarding the Helios sundials was piqued and eventually we felt that we were resisting serendipity that had brought Carlo and Christine to La Faula and that good things should be seized at the moment lest the moment pass. After I lost my Seiko watch bashing my way through bushes surrounding the New Zealand Parliament to escape the Police, watches ceased to be important to me. So many great and important things happened in my life that a simple time-keeper seemed banal and devoid of intrinsic interest. Of course, I needed a watch and buying one in New Zealand still made no sense so my Godfather, on a visit from Singapore, brought me another Seiko, rugged as the previous model, but this had a digital LCD face and, although it sported very many Chronographic functions, it was a watch without romance and beauty. After three years in the New Zealand Police I began law studies. I became a New Zealand Barrister and Solicitor and went on to complete a Master in Law degree at the University of Michigan Law School in the United States. Subsequently I moved to the City of London where I began working as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer in the late 1980′s. With so much going on, time-keeping was a basic function and what I wore on my wrist interested me as much as the type of pencil I wrote with. That is, not at all provided that it was functional and practical.
But in London, working as a lawyer on takeovers, I was working with people for whom money was no object. People who were very rich. Not only, but the young lawyers made enormous amounts of money, more than they could easily spend. It was the Great Britain of Margaret Thatcher at the end, a time of financial liberalisation, privatisation and excess. One could afford to dress in the finest suits, choose any expensive shirt and quirky tie. There are those who are used to money and for them it is normal to have the best. There are those who come from a normal background but who thrive in an environment of luxury: they have arrived! I always felt like a bit of a fraud. I wasn’t a very good lawyer, I found it boring and the hours long and tedious. Meetings seemed interminable but I travelled a lot and got to eat in some fine restaurants so it had its compensations. Of course, in such an environment the watch was a potent status symbol. But not the Rolex. In rarefied legal and merchant banking circles the Rolex is, well, too common. No, Partners in City Law Firms ad Merchant Banks had watches of the finest pedigree: discrete but unmissable, understated but saying-all. (mehr…)
That first Seiko watch with the rugged stainless steel case and band lasted me through all of my adolescence. It got me to the school bus on time, told me when the tennis court was mine and when I had the squash court to play on. It became a part of me in those times before smart-phones. But over time the pin that held the band to the watch case deformed and occasionally the band would uncouple and I would have to rescue the watch before it fell. But, reaching adulthood, a destructive flaw in my character showed itself, a certain indolence. So I just never got around to having the strap-pin replaced and, eventually I lost the watch.
I remember the night I lost the watch. It was as I bashed through thick bushes having breached the perimeter security of the New Zealand Parliament in Wellington. I had been spotted by a Police patrol and was seeking to get away. It was a Sunday night, around 3.00 a.m. in the morning. I was, in fact, also in the Police having joined the New Zealand Police Force (as it was called then; now it is a “Service” not a “Force”) immediately on my 19th Birthday. After 3 months training at the old Trentham Military camp I was posted to Wellington Central Police Station as a probationary Constable. It was a great job for me. My character is not made for repetitive and boring activities. But I love a challenge and being a 19 year-old New Zealand Police Constable in 1979 provided challenge, excitement and stimulation. I loved being on patrol outdoors in one of the most beautiful port cities in the world. I couldn’t believe that I was paid to do a job that I would have done for free. Every day I looked forward to the beginning of my shift. It was a most wonderful period. So it was that occasionally on quiet night-shifts an exercise would be concocted to test some aspect of the police response. On this particular Sunday night I had been chosen, with another, to test the perimeter security of the New Zealand Parliament. It was a bit scary because although the New Zealand Police are not armed the Diplomatic Protection Squad (as it was called then) were armed and they would be the first responders. In addition, the Police Dog handler on duty would also be a first-responder. A Police Dog cannot tell the difference between a Policeman and a crook – we all smell like humans so there was always the slight fear of being bitten.
But the challenge, to see if it was possible to get past our colleagues and the electronic alarm systems and get into the Parliament – legally - was unbeatable and so the two of us began our incursion. We had, in fact, got over the perimeter fence, which at the time consisted of wrought-iron railings from the 1800′s when the Parliament was built, when we were spotted and so we made a run for it. In fact we did get up the steps of the old Parliament before we were cornered and cuffed to give that bit of realism. As the handcuffs went on my wrist I realised that my watch was gone.
After the Second World War the British economy was exhausted and its productive capacity diminished. The shortage of manpower, equipment and fertilisers meant the Great Britain was unable to feed itself and had to resort to rationing until 1954. Great Britain’s lack was New Zealand’s gain and for the post-war period until 1973 New Zealand was Great Britain’s larder shipping enormous quantities of meat and dairy products. New Zealand grew extremely rich on this trade. And complacent. The party finished for New Zealand in 1973 when Great Britain joined the Common Market and its exports to Great Britain were severely restricted. In particular, the Common Market operated a protectionist agricultural policy and so effectively from one day to another New Zealand found its principle market and producer of national income closed to it.
As seems often to be the case, economic theory follows fashions. The fashionable economic theory applicable to New Zealand’s plight in the early 1970′s was “import substitution”. The idea was that instead of responding to the loss of the British market by opening its economy to the world and finding its comparative advantage in world trade, New Zealand should instead close its market to foreign goods on the basis that they would then be substituted by New Zealand-made products. This meant the application of import quotas. As a child I loved English Airfix Models and Matchbox model cars and trucks. Of course, being subject to quotas they were normally unavailable in the shops but when the ship arrived from England carrying that year’s quota of Airfix and Matchbox models my father would ensure that he was there, with many other fathers, the minute they went on sale and his evening arrival on these days was a time of great pleasure and excitement. Ob Sommer oder Winter, auf 0,4° nördlicher Breite ist es das ganze Jahr über heiß und so werden auch nach Ende des Freiwilligendienst kommende Schülergenerationen ganz ohne Strom auf der Sonnenuhr lesen können, wenn es heißt: “Schule aus!”
Gnomonik mit der stereografischen Projektion (Kurzfassung)
Bei meiner Vorliebe für diese Art der Projektion hatte ich eine 15-seitige Arbeit zur Gnomonik verfasst. Hier möchte ich davon eine Kurzfassung für die zwei wichtigsten Arten von Sonnenuhren zur Bestimmung der Stundenlinien sowie den Substilar- und Erhebungswinkel vorstellen.
Im Anhang befinden sich die 3 Vorlagen für die Grundscheibe (stereogr. Netz) und die transparente Deckscheine (Folie oder Transparentpapier) mit den Stundenwinkeln. Beispiel: Für 50° N und -40° (Ost) Wandabweichung. (mehr…)

In enger Beziehung zu HELIOS sende ich heute einen “Knüller”, eine Entdeckung in einem tschechischen Mitteilungblatt. Mit der großen Vorliebe für Drehscheiben findet man immer eine praktische Möglichkeit für unsere Gnomonik-Leidenschaft. Man kann sich damit viele Erleichtungen schaffen.
Was halten Sie von meinem HELIONOM? Vielleicht finden Sie ein Plätzchen im HELIOS, es würde mich freuen. Im Anhang den Text und 2 Abbildungen (HELIONOM für 50° Breite) dazu. Für Rückfragen bin ich immer zu haben.

Am Tag der Sommersonnenwende, am 21. Juni 2012, wurde auf dem prachtvollen Aussichtsberg Muottas Muragl im Oberengadin (Schweiz) die vom Schweizer Hobby-Konstrukteur Fred Bangerter aus Faulensee erbaute Sonnenuhr SINE SOLE SILEO eingeweiht. Dank ihrer neuartigen Konstruktion erlaubt sie eine einmalig genaue Zeitablesung – auf 10 Sekunden genau oder genauer, und dies während den Sommermonaten zu jedem beliebigen Tageszeitpunkt. Es handelt sich um eine an einem Findling montierte Äquatorialuhr. Damit funktioniert sie im Sommerhalbjahr als Sonnenuhr und im Winterhalbjahr als Monduhr. Bei Mondschatten ermöglicht sie eine praktisch gleich genaue Zeitablesung wie bei Sonnenschatten. Die Engadiner Bergbahnen, welche die Uhr in Auftrag gegeben hatten, haben Informationen dazu auf ihrer Homepage aufgeschaltet. bei meiner Vorliebe für Drehscheiben habe ich noch etwas. Es geht dabei um die Besonnung von Hauswänden. Wann beginnt das Streiflicht und wann endet dies? Eine Frage, die sich jeder Sonnenuhrenfreund stellt und was für die Praxis auch wichtig ist. Die Besonnung ist infoge der wechselnden Sonnenhöhen jahreszeitlich sehr verschieden. Man kann sie berechnen, mit einer Drehscheine geht es jedoch schneller. Die Genauigkeit reicht für unsere Zwecke aus.

Sehr geehrter Herr Heller,
über die positiven Zustimmungen zu meinem Längengradverschieber habe ich mich gefreut. Heute möchte ich meinen Mondkompass vorstellen. Ich habe mit ihm gute Erfahrungen gemacht, besonders in den astronomischen Schülerarbeitsgemeinschaften.
Man muss hier einen Kompromiss eingehen. Der synodische Monat hat 29,5 Tage, der Tag aber 24 Stunden. Die kleine Ungenauigkeit spielt in der Praxis aber kaum eine Rolle.
Im Anhang finden Sie Bilder, die Sie gewiss schöner gestalten werden.
Vielleicht findet mein Mondkompass bei HELIOS eine Unterkunft, ich würde mich freuen.

In the 1960′s I was a kid growing up in Wellington, New Zealand. Those were other times, before computers and smart-phones, and a mark of arriving maturity was being given a watch on one’s twelfth birthday. I turned twelve at the beginning of 1972. My parents, being young, were enjoying the freedom available to baby-boomers at that time after the stultifying years following the Second World War. As a mark of his – but not my – individualism, my father always insisted that we wore brown shoes on the basis that when we were adults we would be obliged to wear black-ones for all of our working lives. I wanted black shoes like all the other kids. But it was true that, until I came to La Faula, every working day I wore black shoes so in this my father was right. My friends who turned twelve mostly got their watch. Normally it was a Timex with a black strap and normal numbers. I wasn’t wholly surprised to receive a watch with a brown strap and Roman numerals. My watch was not like those of the other kids but it was elegant. I remember it still with its broad white dial and criptic I’s, V’s and X’s. I can’t remember how much I used that watch. For me, growing up in New Zealand, a land of light and contrast mediated by the great and ever-near Pacific Ocean, what really mattered was the light at each moment of the day. I loved the mornings with their golden sunburst, mid-day with the great orb blasting through a blue sky, yellow-baked afternoons under a cobalt blue mantle. And, finally, it was time to repair inside for bed when the vagueness of the light at dusk announced that the allotted time for that day was up. My guess is that I used the watch little. With my brother, I was packed out of the door by my mother at the allotted time to catch the school bus. School was a succession of bells regimenting our movements throughout the day. But those mornings playing tennis with friends as the rising sun pushed away the cool of morning, midday throwing a tennis ball against the high brick wall of the school shaded from searing sun, blue sky and blue ocean behind us, and afternoon, sauntering down the school driveway as the sun went behind the hills to catch the school bus home. These things are with me still.
