Dials with a compass, introduced in the 15th century, were popular sundials. The compass served to face the sundial toward the north and the gnomon (a bit of cord or a flexible triangle) could be raised or lowered to accommodate the latitude where the compass is used. This model has compass rose in the upper part with a needle to determine the 32 different rhumbs.

Description

The diptych dial was probably first made in the 15th or 16th centuries in Nürnberg/Germany. It consists of two dials in one, a horizontal and a vertical, with a common string gnomon. Both dials are joined together at right angles, with their two halves conventionally folding together for fitting into the pocket. Hemisferium manufactures different decorated models of diptych dials.
