HORA Prayer Sundial

The HORA Prayer Sundial is used to determine important prayer times of Islam from the course of the Sun.

Salāt is the ritual prayer of Islam. It is to be performed a total of five times a day in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, the Qibla, at fixed times. The time periods of the five prayers are directly derived from the course of the Sun on the location. Therefore, sundials were originally used to determine the prayer periods.  Especially the prayer times of the two prayers that take place in daylight, Dhuhr (noon prayer) and 'Asr (afternoon prayer), can ideally be determined with a sundial, and the HORA prayer sundial is very well suited for this purpose.

Unlike the other HORA sundials, the shadow caster, called gnomon, shaped as a dome with a tip stands vertically on the dial. You read the solar time and the prayer times at the tip of the shadow.  This makes it possible to follow the respective beginning of the seasons as well.

The distance and direction to the Kaaba in Mecca, called Qibla, is indicated on the sundial.

The HORA Prayer Sundial is calculated for central Germany (latitude 50°N), here it shows with good accuracy the solar time and the periods of the Muslim prayers Dhuhr and 'Asr.

If you want even higher accuracy, we recommend the HORA Prayer Sundial City. This is calculated and manufactured as a custom-made sundial for the desired location (between 40°N and 56°N) exactly. Also the Qibla, the distance and direction to the Kaaba is then calculated and drawn in for the location.

The dial of the sundial is made of porcelain and is handmade in the porcelain manufactory Rudolf Kämmer in Rudolstadt. The printed sundial scale is fired into the glaze at 800°C. The gnomon is made of finely turned stainless steel. The sundial stands on three rubber feet and can be placed on a sunny windowsill or outdoors all year round.
